The Hidden Treasures of Huangshan

Anhui is a rural province rich in folklore, history and natural beauty. It represents a timeless China of terraced rice paddies and ancient villages. The more remote villages at the foot of Mt.Huangshan are normally "closed" to non-Chinese visitors. However, on this tour,we have secured special permit to take our guests to the villages of Nanping and Hongcun, famed for their magnificent architecture, dated back to the Ming and Qing dynasties(16th-19th centuries). The unique beauty of Huangshan Mountain has been celebrated by poets and painters since the days of Confucius. UNESCO also has recognized the magnificence of the peaks by putting them on their list of world heritage sites. From the summit at dawn you can marvel at the surrounding peaks, afloat like islands in a sea of clouds, slowly flooded with light as the sun creeps over the horizon.

Itinerary

Day 1.Beijing
Arrive Beijing in the evening, transfer to the centrally located Beijing Hotel for three nights stay.

Day 2.Beijing
We start the tour with a visit to Jinshan Park for a superb panoramic view over the heart of Beijing before going to the Forbidden City ,the complex of imperial palaces which were home to the emperors for over 500 years.Grand halls and courts give way gradually to the more intimate domestic quarters giving an insight into the pampered isolation of the emperors. In the afternoon, we visit the Summer Palace where the emperors went to escape the heat of the city.Centered on the beautiful Kunming Lake where a mable boat is moored, the flowering arbours and delightful pavillions create a tranquil setting. In the evening, we attend a acrobatics performance.

Day 3.Beijing
In the morning,we go to the Drum Tower from Beihai where we take rickshaws for a fascinating tour of Beijing’s hutongs-old narrow streets lined with ancient courtyard houses, giving us a glimpse into the daily life of Beijing residents. This is followed by a visit to the magnificent residence of the Qing Dynasty Prince Gong's Palace. After lunch,we visit the Yonghe Lamasery, one of the most renowned Tibetan buddhist temples outside Tibet itself. The temple halls are set in enclosed curtyards and are adorned with magnificent carved statues of the Buddha, the greatest of which,18 metres high, is carved from a single piece of sandalwood. In the evening,we are guests at a Peking roast duck banquet.

Day 4.Beijing
We travel north to visit the jewel in Beijing’s crown-The Great Wall at Badaling. After lunch visit the beautiful Temple of Heaven.

Day 5.Beijing/ Huangshan
Morning we are free at leisure. Afternoon take a flight to the Huangshan. Arrival transfer to the International Hotel.

Day 6.Mt.Huangshan
Early this morning we drive into the mountains. A cable car journey takes us on the last leg of our journey to the summit of Mt.Huangshan. We stay at Scandinavian style Xihai Hotel from where we explore the stone paths, climbing through the forest of tangled pines to view the distant valleys and magnificent escarpments. One of the highlights of a visit to Huangshan is to watch the sunrise. A very early start is vital in order to fully experience the breathtaking views.

Day 7.Tunxi
This morning we take the cable car back down the mountain to connect with our coach to Seven Memorial Archways of Shexian County. Nearby is the Xinan river where we cruise leisurely through a picturesque landscape of traditional boats, houses and lush green mountains. Anhui is renowned for its green tea,and during the ride, we disembark to pick our own tea on the terraced hillsides, which is later taken to the farmers’mill for roasting and drying, giving us a real taste of China. At the Yulian dam,we admire the cormorants at rest. We return Tunxi in the late afternoon and then take a stroll down the old street, lined with ancient shops including a traditional pharmacy.

Day 8.Hongcun/Nanping
We travel to Yixian county and visit two absolutely stunning villages. In Hongcun a traditional farmer’s lunch is served from rattan baskets at a former house of a merchant. Built around "heaven-well" courtyards, these old houses are full of decorative flourishes, from the cur brick-work to the lavishly carved timbers. Their layout reflects the sometimes complicated social arrangements of a wealthy Chinese family before the modern age, with separate and secluded quarters for wives and concubines and rooms devoted exclusively to opium, and mahjong. The village of Nanping is the location for the famous chinese film"Judou"by Zhang Yimou and Gong Li. It is famous for its ancestral halls, once common throughout China when ancestor worship was part of daily life. We return Tunxi in the evening to connect our flight to Shanghai. On arrival you are met and transfer to the historic Peace Hotel.
